Principal Spotlight, Issue Two

Highlighting the Inspiring Work of Principals Across Aotearoa

Principal Spotlight‘ is an initiative driven by the New Zealand Principals’ Federation to highlight the positives of principalship by spotlighting principals from across New Zealand.

By spotlighting our peers we lift morale, strengthen connection, and help attract and inspire future leaders. It’s a chance to pause, reflect, and feel proud of the difference you make every day.

A massive thank you to Stephen Eames of Rāroa Normal Intermediate School for featuring in this issue of ‘Principal Spotlight’!

What is your favourite thing about working in education?

I love leading. Leadership is both a skill and an art, and while I don’t always get it right, I thrive in the role of drawing out the absolute best in people. There’s something deeply rewarding about cultivating a culture that nurtures outstanding, high-performing individuals. It’s about inspiring growth, fostering potential, and building a collective momentum toward excellence.

How long have you been in principalship?

Four and a half years.

What is your most memorable moment in education?

One of the most memorable periods in my career was when creativity, innovation, and future-focused thinking were truly at the forefront of education. It was a time of bold transformation, where schools embraced change and pushed boundaries. While these elements are still present today, the collective drive and momentum have softened slightly. I often reflect on that era as a powerful reminder of what’s possible when visionary thinking leads the way.

What excites you about principalship?

Creating a kura that hums. I’m driven by the challenge of building systems, structures, and high-quality educational programmes that are engaging, motivational, and deeply student-focused. When everything aligns culture, curriculum, and community. Creating an environment where students don’t just learn, they thrive.

What PLD have you completed that you found beneficial?

Being part of a Normal School and an Intermediate has provided rich opportunities to connect and collaborate across strong networks. For me, there’s nothing more powerful than learning alongside others in similar environments. The shared experiences, insights, and challenges create a dynamic space for growth and innovation that formal PLD alone can’t always replicate.

If you could change one thing in education what would it be?

I’d change the direction we’re paddling. At times, it feels like education has drifted off course. I’d love to see schools refocus on truly preparing students for the future—equipping them with the skills, mindset, and adaptability they’ll need to thrive in an ever-changing world.

What do you enjoy outside of your life as a principal?

Spending quality time with my whānau is incredibly important to me. I also love mountain biking, getting out on the trails and escaping into nature is a great way to recharge. Whether it’s with family or out riding, I value the moments that allow me to step back, reflect, and reconnect.
